Dr Agata Maria Catena Calabrese

DIGITAL ARCHAEOLOGY ADVISOR

DR. AGATA M. C. CALABRESE has served in an advisory capacity for the St. John’s Online project since 2022 and specialises in sensory archaeology and digital archaeology. In her doctoral thesis, Buried in the Senses: Investigating the North Mesopotamian Early Bronze Age Sensorial Experiences of Mortuary Rituals with GIS, completed within the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney in 2022, Dr. Calabrese innovatively employed and critically analysed GIS data to reconstruct the otherwise long-forgotten multisensorial experience of mortuary rituals and landscape perception in Early Bronze Age North Mesopotamia. In late 2022, she was awarded The AIA «Telestes» Award for Material Culture Research in Ancient Music and Dance from the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA).

Dr. Calabrese has ten years’ experience in international and national archaeology and cultural heritage management, and currently works as a Senior Heritage Project Officer at Liverpool City Council, having previously worked as a Senior Archaeologist at Comber Consultants, and as a sessional academic lecturer and tutor at the University of Sydney. She is experienced at survey, assessment, archaeological excavation, testing, monitoring, salvage and reporting and has a sound understanding of NSW’s archaeological heritage legislation, policies and practice. She undertakes historic research, significance assessment in accordance with the Burra Charter and provides mitigation and management recommendations. Dr. Calabrese has extensive experience in the management of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal archaeological sites and places, ensuring all Aboriginal archaeological projects are undertaken in accordance with the Due Diligence Code of Practice for the Protection of Aboriginal Objects in NSW, Code of Practice for Archaeological Investigation of Aboriginal Objects in NSW and the Guide to investigating, assessing and reporting on Aboriginal cultural heritage in NSW. She also has extensive experience in undertaking Aboriginal consultation in accordance with the Guide to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation for Proponents 2010 and in the preparation of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment Reports.
