About this Dataset

By Michaela Ann Cameron

The St. John’s Online “Burials” dataset provides open access transcriptions of all marked and unmarked burials registered in the parish of St. John’s, Parramatta, beginning with the first recorded burial in January 1790: the burial of James Magee. At present, registered burials are available to 1860, with more burial data due for release at regular intervals. The database is currently browsable by name only, but the release of additional browsing and search features that will assist you with your use of this resource is imminent.

The transcriptions of the St. John’s parish register entries within this database were completed voluntarily by Dr. Michaela Ann Cameron between 2015 and 2020 over thousands of hours, with the intention that these transcriptions would be freely accessible to the public.

As a large scale transcription project undertaken to help preserve one of the historic cemetery’s major assets (its parish register) for future generations, as well as increase public engagement with the heritage site by improving accessibility to those records on a non-commercial, open access platform, this database is the latest in a line of significant contributions made by St. John’s taphophiles for more than a century. “Part I: St. John’s Taphophiles” briefly outlines the history of that transcription work completed by a number of passionate individuals.

This dataset is not without its ‘quirks’, so please refer to the information published in “Part II: Quirks” so you can more accurately interpret what you find in this database.
