The large, blank space available on this memorial potentially indicates this was intended to be a family plot, in which case this is possibly also the grave of Richard’s wife MARY GRIMSHAW [I]. It is, however, unlikely to be the grave of their daughter MARY GRIMSHAW [II]; she predeceased both of her parents so, presumably, her name would have been inscribed at the time of Richard’s inscription, if her grave was converted into a family plot on her father’s demise. MARY [I], on the other hand, died much later, so it is possible she was interred in the same grave as her husband but that there may not have been anyone left who could provide sufficient funds for her name to be added to the memorial.
